Origin and development of the Ibero-American Academy of Sciences and its affiliated institutions

Typically, an organization is responsible for carrying out all the activities scheduled within that same organization. In the case of the Ibero-American Academy of Sciences (AIC—established recently, in 2014), its role is to coordinate activities that had already been conducted by other organizations prior to its inception. While some of these organizations continue to perform their original functions—remaining as sub-institutions (or entities subordinate to a larger body)—the AIC serves to group them together and represent them as the primary institution for the scientific work they carry out, whether individually or collectively.

The history of these institutions originates with a team of researchers in the sciences and humanities. Beginning in 1979, through a collaboration between Seville and Madrid (Spain), they first established the publishing house APublicaciones (AP). Subsequently, they created the International Center for Scientific Research (CIEIC), which encompasses the Institute for Historical and Economic Studies (IEHE) and the International Center for Studies and Artistic and Literary Creation (CIECAyL)—the latter with an academic base at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain). The CIEIC is dedicated to scientific research, while the CIECAyL focuses on the humanities. Later, the Center for Comparative Studies of Latin America (CiECAL) was established in Mexico City, with a specific focus on the Latin American region. In 2014, the Academy of Sciences of Latin America and Europe was founded, with headquarters in both Madrid (Spain) and Mexico City (Mexico). In 2023, it was renamed the Ibero-American Academy of Sciences, with its central headquarters shared between Mexico City and Madrid (a seat shared between two sister nations, characterized by an intellectual and institutional miscegenation).

Thus, from an institutional standpoint, all the sciences (social sciences, applied sciences, exact sciences, etc., as well as the humanities)—developed by the various sub-institutions mentioned earlier (CiECAL, CIECAyL, and CIEIC)—are grouped together and currently fall under the institutional umbrella of the AIC (Ibero-American Academy of Sciences), which serves as their official representative. In other words, the IEHE is part of the CIEIC, and the latter—along with CiECAL and CIECAyL—is officially subordinate to the AIC.

And all these institutions, including AIC, are administratively dependent on the Act Forum Foundation.
